It’s lighter than water, but punches way above its weight when it comes to boosting memory.
Today, we’re talking lithium, shortened to “Li” on the periodic table.
For centuries, possibly even millennia, it was known that the water from some hot springs had healing properties. One such example is Castle Hot Springs in Morristown, Arizona, United States. It is one of about a dozen Lithium-rich hot springs in North America.
Water from Castle Hot Springs contains high amounts of Lithium. The mood elevating properties of this water were well studied. Scientists found that giving this water to patients with depression provided great benefit to them.
This research gave rise to the popular soft drink, 7UP. The brain-child of Charles Leiper Grigg, it was called “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” in 1929 (someone please fire the ad agency that came up with this name…). A bit later (21 years later, in fact), the name was shortened to 7UP. “7” referred to the molecular mass of Lithium, and “UP” referred to its mood-elevating properties. Ironically, the Lithium in 7UP had already been removed in 1948, thanks to that ever vigilant watch-dog of the American people, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
But lithium hadn’t left the building entirely. Big Pharma took an interest. From the early 1960s, psychiatric medications containing lithium were registered around the world. A mind-healing substance previously available to anyone, suddenly found itself restricted to doctor’s prescription pads.
And not just any lithium, mind you. They selected one of the more toxic versions of lithium for this honour: lithium carbonate.
For decades afterwards, the only solution psychiatrists could offer for people diagnosed with bipolar depression (“mania”) was lithium carbonate (sold under the name Camcolit in South Africa). Yes, a simple mineral worked better than anything science could come up with for decades. Too bad it was toxic in this form and poorly absorbed into the brain. To get enough into the brain, lithium carbonate must be prescribed at doses that are likely to cause organ damage, especially kidney damage. We’re not even mentioning all the other side effects, which include thyroid dysfunction, brain fog and weight gain. Regular lithium testing is needed to limit toxicity – another wonderful revenue stream. Like most things coming out of Big Pharma, lithium carbonate became one more way to trap people into perpetual doctor’s visits and tests, with side effects providing added income. A truly great business model for a product that should have cost a pittance, don’t you think?
Morality? Ethics? Compassion? Who cares when you’re making money?
Let’s draw a curtain over this dark chapter. All is not lost. A new Li-ght is dawning.
While Big Pharma was bringing lithium carbonate to market, a German physician named Dr Hans Nieper was studying a different form, called lithium orotate. He showed how this form led to higher brain levels of lithium without damaging the body. Few people listened and the amazing benefits of lithium orotate remained largely unknown.
Here is a list of known lithium benefits, according to science:
Neuro-protection
- Higher natural lithium levels in drinking water protect against Alzheimer’s Disease.
- Lithium significantly lowers cognitive decline in dementia patients.
- Lithium increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which promotes nerve cell healing and growth.
- It inhibits an enzyme (GSK-3β) involved in neuronal development and energy metabolism, which is linked to Alzheimer’s and circadian rhythm disruption.
- New research suggests lithium deficiency may lead to increased tau tangles, another hallmark of dementia.
Mood Stabilisation
- Lithium can alter circadian (day-night cycle) gene expression, which is relevant for mood disorders like bipolar disorder, where day-night cycles are typically disrupted.
Suicide Prevention
- Higher concentrations of lithium in drinking water are clearly linked to lower suicide rates (link).
Anger Management
- Lithium intake is associated with fewer anger outbursts. Perfect for keeping a cool head in stressful situations.
Ageing and Telomere Length
- Lithium treatment leads to longer telomere lengths in mice and human studies. Telomere length is a biomarker of cellular ageing. The longer the telomeres, the longer the natural (expected) lifespan.
Anti-inflammatory Effects
- Lithium has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α.
- Its anti-inflammatory effects can be enhanced when combined with substances like caffeine.
Obesity and Diabetes
- Counties with higher lithium levels in their drinking water have shown lower levels of obesity and diabetes, possibly due to lithium’s positive effects on circadian rhythm and blood glucose regulation.
Prevention of Lead Toxicity
- Lithium mitigates the neurotoxicity of lead exposure.

In Summary
Lithium orotate is a unique version of lithium. It is readily absorbed into the brain, meaning you only need tiny doses to see massive benefits.
