Happy November!
Not sure if you got tricked or treated this past weekend, but we at Integrow Health have a TREAT for you this week.
(See the end of this post to find out what it is.)
Today, our spotlight falls on Cancer Bush, often also known by its botanical name Sutherlandia.
It is one of South Africa’s oldest and best-known medicinal plants, used by all people groups for a huge variety of health issues.
Zulu warriors drank Sutherlandia tea before going to war (it boosts vitality) and Zulu widows drank it when their husbands did not return from a battle (it helps with grief and depression). The BaSotho call it Phetola (“conversion” or “turn-around”) since it has such a dramatic influence on chronic diseases.
Its potency-enhancing effects are celebrated by many of southern Africa’s tribes.
The Voortrekkers used it during the Great Flu of 1918, apparently to great effect, if the anecdotes are anything to go by.
They also used it to treat cancer, which is where the common name comes from. Research shows that it does not cure cancer, but it has an immune-stimulating effect. This helps the body fight cancer better. More specifically, it boosts appetite in chronically ill patients. This extra appetite helps cancer patients to eat more, and thus stay alive longer with much better quality of life. Roughly half of cancer patients die from eating too little, mainly due to loss of appetite.
Rest assured, folks who have normal weight, or are overweight do not experience this profound boost in appetite.
It is the apparent ability of Sutherlandia to adapt its effects to the needs of the user which has made it so popular among so many different people groups. It is likely that Sutherlandia acts by boosting the production of a few key hormones in the brain, but relatively little research has been done on this remarkable plant. It seems to strengthen all types of muscle in the body – including heart muscle and smooth muscle (gut and bladder).
Who can benefit from Sutherlandia?
* The chronically ill (cancer, infections, heart failure, kidney failure, etc)
* The elderly (in fact, anyone over the age of 45, not just the elderly)
* Anyone battling an infection (whether virus or bacteria)
* Diabetics (type 1 and 2 – it lowers blood glucose)
* The incontinent (it boosts bladder muscle strength)
Who should NOT take Sutherlandia?
It is not recommended in pregnancy.
