Roses are red (and red blood cells too)

RED is the colour of LOVE. It also happens to be the colour of blood. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

Considering how many passionate couples carve their initials on tree trunks and other suitable objects, one has to marvel at the number of people bringing sharp objects along on a date.

Some of us prefer to express our passion in less bloodthirsty ways, like a bar of chocolate, for example.

Blood is not only important to love. It is also important to life. If you lose 2 L of the red liquid in one go, you’re in danger of losing your life.

Fortunately, few of us ever face such a sudden loss of blood. That’s the good news. The bad news is, many of us lose blood slowly over time, and don’t replace it.

A Common Problem

Iron deficiency affects roughly one third of adult women (and half as many men). If left unchecked, iron deficiency leads to anaemia (No, Anaemia isn’t the name of the latest pop star, it’s a disease). This is because iron is crucial for the production of red blood cells. And red blood cells are the little work horses that carry oxygen to all our organs and then take the excess carbon dioxide (naughty greenhouse gas) back to the lungs for exhalation.

In other words, if your red blood cells are in trouble, you’re in trouble (and no amount of chocolate is going to save you).

Iron’s RDI (Recommended Dietary Intake) is 8 mg daily for men and somewhere between 8 and 30 mg daily for women (pregnant women need the most).

Who’s Been Stealing My Iron?

At first, that sounds like a small amount. The body manages to recycle most of its iron, so it is not so dependent on dietary sources. Replacing lost iron is not so easy, however. Just try to find a food source of iron and you will see for yourself.

Let’s work on a daily supply of 20 mg iron, for example.

20 mg of iron is found in:

* 200 g pumpkin seed
* 300 g beef liver
* 400 g biltong
* 600 g beef steak
* 600 g cooked lentils
* 700 g spinach
* 3,000 g boiled broccoli

(When last did you have 3 kg boiled broccoli in one day?)

Not only is it hard to eat that much, but it will make your bank balance look anaemic, too.

What is more, iron from plants is poorly absorbed. With the modern emphasis on “plant-based diets” (mostly meaning “factory processed food”), most people are not absorbing enough iron to replace whtat they lose, even when it is present in the food item.

As with magnesium, our forebears got most of their iron from playing rugby drinking ground or well water – not from food. Nowadays, access to ground water is less common (and most of it gets filtered anyway).

What Are The Symptoms Of Low Iron?

* Fatigue / Lack of energy
* Rapid heartbeat
* Shortness of breath
* Poor sleep / Restless legs
* Pale skin / lips / nails
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Attention deficit
* Poor appetite
* Sore tongue
* Unusual “food” cravings (such as for ice or dirt)
* Brittle or spoon-shaped nails
* Cold hands and feet
* Hair loss

Ring any bells?

If five or more of these symptoms hit home, you may be suffering from low iron.

Why Iron Supplements Don’t Work

Traditionally, iron supplementation was done with mineral iron products. These were crude and cheap, but full of side effects (painful stomach, nausea, vomiting, black stools). The stomach pain is nearly universal, sometimes severe. Iron-ically, to combat the stomach pain, many patients take the iron supplement with food, while it is well known that iron is best absorbed from an empty stomach. Making matters even worse, the iron in these inorganic supplements does not absorb all that well. You need to take them for months to see an effect. As a result, many patients never complete a course of traditional iron supplementation.

So, What To Do?

Enter HemaFit Blood Support, our amazing iron supplement. HemaFit was specifically crafted to support your body’s natural iron metabolism and help you feel your best. It addresses all the concerns raised by traditional iron supplements.

What Makes HemaFit Blood Support Great?

HemaFit isn’t your average bag of rusty nails. Typically, the focus of an iron supplement is on, well, iron. This one-sided focus misses the complexity of iron metabolism and is likely the main reason people stop using their iron supplement due to side effects.

HemaFit Blood Support is different.

Not only does HemaFit provide a dose of 20 mg of elemental iron per capsule, but it also comes in a well-absorbed format. Furthermore, HemaFit also includes essential nutrients that enhance iron absorption even more and support the production of red blood cells.

Remember, it’s not about the iron, it’s about the red blood cells. Iron is simply part of the solution.

Maximum Iron Absorption

HemaFit Blood Support combines high-quality ingredients that work together to optimise iron absorption and utilisation in your body. Here’s what each ingredient brings to the table:

– Ferrous Bisglycinate
This form of iron is renowned for being both gentle on the stomach and highly absorbable at the same time. With 20 mg of elemental iron in each capsule, HemaFit packs a steel fist in a velvet glove.

– Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)
Each capsule provides 100 mg of non-GMO Vitamin C. Vitamin C is known to maximise iron absorption. Vitamin C binds with iron in the acidic environment of the stomach and keeps it soluble during its passage down the gut. This way, more iron is absorbed.

– Beetroot Extract
A natural powerhouse, beetroot contains nitrates and antioxidants that improve blood flow. It also helps in the production of red blood cells.

– Plant Polyphenols
Found naturally in plants, polyphenols have many benefits for the blood stream. They protect red blood cell membranes from damage, prevent the clumping of red blood cells and help dissolve plaque in the arteries. All these actions improve blood flow to the organs. By chelating iron, polyphenols also help regulate the way iron is moved around the body.

– L-Methyl Folate (Vitamin B9)
Folate is essential for red blood cell formation. The problem is, the vast majority of supplements use folic acid, a synthetic form of folate. Folic acid is not found in nature and is actually toxic if more than a tiny amount is taken daily. Folate, on the other hand, is the true natural form and is not toxic to the body, even in higher doses.

– Methyl Cobalamin (Vitamin B12)
As with folate, vitamin B12 is mostly present in supplements in its synthetic form (because it’s cheaper). While the synthetic vitamin B12 is not toxic, it does not absorb very well. Each capsule of HemaFit provides 50 mcg of methyl B12. This is the natural form and is also the best absorbed form. During the production of red blood cells, vitamin B12 powers a crucial step. Without vitamin B12, red blood cell production grinds to a halt.

Vegans, We Thought Of You!
