It is easy to feel powerless when prominent people square off in public. The old Kenyan proverb comes to mind, “When elephants fight, the grass gets trampled.” With a slight shudder, one wonders what the grass looks like when elephants stampede…
We, The Grass…
This is maybe a good moment to reflect on the power we, The Grass, have. After all, we feed the elephants. History tells us the ecosystem will regain its balance. Elephants come and elephants go, but The Grass stays. The occasional dead elephant nourishes The Grass. Grass is the ultimate survivor. Endurance is power. We’re in it for the long haul.
Instead of looking at what we cannot change, let’s look at what we can do to endure.
If you are over the age of 50 and not exercising, you are losing muscle mass at a rate of about half a teaspoon per day (~2.5g). That adds up real quick.
Since Jesse Kriel and his Boks provided us with a highlight during a somewhat dismal news cycle, let us focus on rugby as a parallel for The Game Of Life. Yes, there are some who claim rugby is not a parallel, it IS life, but we’ll pretend we can’t hear them. And yes, Wiaan Mulder and the Proteas provided another highlight, but cricket won’t work for this illustration. The English, being a very religious nation, invented the game of cricket to gain a concept of eternity.
Right, back to rugby (with a lowercase R). A rugby game has two halves, each 40 minutes long, with a half time break of 10 minutes. Total: 90 minutes. If each minute represents a year of your life, it looks like this:
1-40 years: Build-up
40-50 years: Plateau
50-90 years: Decline
90 years: Final whistle (proceed to cricket game)
There are many factors that influence these numbers, but it should give you pause for thought. Even just maintaining the muscle mass you have takes a fair amount of intentional actions once you’ve passed 50. It’s certainly not business as usual during the second “half” of our lives. Furthermore, if you don’t play by the rules, you get a red card and exit early. Some may get a yellow card and can no longer actively participate in daily activities.
