Description
Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy — also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) — is a non-invasive, light-based treatment that uses near-infrared wavelengths to stimulate cellular energy production in the retina. First evaluated for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in a landmark 2008 pilot study, PBM has since grown into one of the most promising non-pharmacological approaches in integrative eye care, with ongoing clinical validation through trials such as LIGHTSITE II and III.
Who May Benefit
PBM therapy may benefit individuals diagnosed with early or dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration, particularly those experiencing declining visual acuity, the presence of drusen, macular edema, retinal bleeding, or pigment accumulation. It may also be of interest to older adults seeking proactive, non-invasive support for retinal health before significant vision loss occurs. Because it carries no known adverse effects or tissue damage, it presents a compelling option for those who prefer a gentle, drug-free approach alongside conventional eye care.
Uses
- Improves Visual Acuity: Clinical evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in AMD patients.
- Reduces Drusen & Retinal Changes: May decrease drusen deposits, macular edema, retinal bleeding, and pigment accumulations associated with AMD.
- Stimulates Mitochondrial Energy Production: Near-infrared light activates mitochondrial function in retinal cells, boosting ATP production and reducing oxidative stress.
- Long-Term Benefit: Visual improvements observed in the 2008 pilot study were maintained for up to 36 months after treatment concluded, with no further sessions required.
- Non-Invasive & Safe: No adverse effects or morphological tissue damage were recorded in clinical evaluation.
Composition
- Wavelength: 780 nm (near-infrared)
- Power output: 7.5 mW
Directions
- Treatment distance: 1 cm from the eye
- Session duration: 40 seconds per application
- Protocol: 4 sessions over 2 weeks (as per the original pilot study)
Storage & Care
- Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Handle with care — avoid dropping or exposing the device to moisture.
- Follow manufacturer guidelines for device maintenance and calibration.
